Bon Appetite - Monmerde Hotel, Piddle

We, of the Ragged Society of Antiquarian Ramblers, are delighted to be able to feature reviews of some of the fine tea rooms and eateries to be found across England, as submitted by respectable members of the motoring public...

PIDDLE, Oxon.                                               MONMERDE HOTEL

Mrs. Colonel Hampton (deceased), a lady of character, runs - and has run for many years - this unique establishment. The 'Five-legged rabbit Stew' caught the eye, and proved to be a delectation of some note; especially when in the company of a bottle of Cape hock! Enjoyed a good fruit fool with some delicious home-made biscuits. On the whole, excellent plain cooking, but the chef can be persuaded to drum-up a very passable coq au vin; to do so, essential that you phone proprietor in advance. Be sure not to miss the remarkable obelisk in the hotel grounds, dedicated to the late Colonel Hampton (deceased). Note also, the ornately carved driving glove rack (a triple decker!). Coffee good.

Where does one put the servants? Firmly in their place, that's where!

I tend to keep mine in the shed. We tried having them in the main house, but one could never get used to the smell.

  3. Dear Mrs J. R. Oonstead (deceased),

I am most fortunate in that the late Colonel Hampton accidently shot my nose clean off of my face with his 12 bore. His weapon always was prone to going off prematurely!

I am sorry for your loss (Your nose that is) I notice that you say your husband is 'late'. Mine on the other hand was always early, which as I'm sure you will know from your husband's weapon, always made for a very frustrating bank holiday weekend.
