Today....

A question for you... What did you do today? I was fortunate, no, privileged, to be able to say...

I touched and saw a bible that Anne Boleyn probably read and touched...

I touched and saw the first map of Norwich

I saw the collection of Blomefield's History of Norfolk

I saw and touched a medieval ship carved into a wall

And I saw and touched a complete daisy wheel carved into a wall.

A Ramble that had me in awe, struck with wonderment and excitement. I feel privileged.

  1. You should have been wearing white cotton gloves, you vandal!

I have fired a musket belonging to one of the personal guard of Elizabeth the 2nd, which was present at her famous speech at Tilbury Dock. Beat that! (I am careful to place exclamation marks after light-hearted comments these days - forgive me)

  3. Parchment and stone can be just as good storytellers as we can!

  4. I touched myself, with extreme prejudice. And yet, I recovered my wits. I love the carvings shown here , as a stone carver (hobby not profession) I search old sculptures looking for chisel marks, when I find this I am connected to the hands and eyes that caused it.

  5. Gloves, gloves, gloves! Nitrile or latex are even better when handling paper, as you lose dexterity with cotton.

Now to get down off my soap box, I love your blog. Thanks for showing us all the interesting things you find.

  6. Since I appear to be the only Ragged Rambler taking tea at the learned society today, I feel it is beholden on me to welcome you Ms Dig to our hallowed halls of learning and fun. To have an archaeologist from such far flung Regions is an honour indeed!

And thankyou for your advice re the gloves although In truth most Ragged Ramblers choose not to use them as theimperfect the efficient removal of flask lids.

  7. 'Imperfect' is a Lenwadian Word used to mean both impede and prevent.

  8. Oh my word! Has anyone ever seen that episode of Father Ted where FT sees a small dent in his car and gives it a little tap with the hammer to straighten it out, and a few hours later he's reduced it to a complete wreck? Well, I've just done the blogging equivalent to Thadeus' post (above)! I only meant to correct a spelling, and then I thought I'd add a space and then... well, I've gone and ruined the formatting completely...

Thadeus, if you see this please forgive me this misguided intervention. I am contrite!

  9. Dear Ms. Dig,

The Ragged Ramblers preferred glove of choice is the driving glove (soft tan leather with string backs).

Concurring with my esteemed colleague, Mr. Many Coats, I would like to welcome your comments and thank you for your kind and generous appreciation.

    Huzzah!

  10. Dear The Yellow Fringe,

Thank you for commenting here. Your sentiments - if I might be so bold - are very 'Ragged Rambler' in nature. This curious collective of stumblers, mumblers, bumblers and poets love to connect, imaginatively, with people from the past - why, we are even open to comments from people many years since departed!

    Huzzah to you!

  11. I am many years departed and I have never let this small impediment become a barrier to leaving comments here - even though these people are clearly deranged!!!
