I was very fortunate earlier today to be granted access to one of the finest examples pre-Reformation ecclesiastical art in England - the Despenser Reredos, that probably dates from the late 1380s. Usually, this wonderful altar piece is protected behind a barrier, with additional alarms to deter unwanted attention. It was a privilege to see St Luke's chapel without barriers or chairs and I am extremely fortunate to be able to get so close to this stunning work of medieval art. Because it is unlikely that you will be able to get such a close-up view of the reredos in person, I want to share some of my photographs with you here...
Great art. I understand it was disguised as the underside of a table to save it from the reformation.
